Fusian
Fast Casual Furniture
A collection of custom furniture and brand elements for Fusian restaurant group, designed to withstand the everyday use of fast casual dining and reinforce the modern aesthetics of the Fusian brand.
An emphasis was placed on materiality, durability, sustainability, ergonomics, and ease of repair. The Fusian collection includes custom chairs, stools, signage, merchandising displays, and a wide variety of tables produced for six locations over the course of two years.
A conscious effort was placed on designing toward a flat-to-form construction methodology, leaning on digital manufacturing to produce both prototypes and production geometry. This allowed for rapid iteration in true materials and less secondary refinement in the production stage, with the added benefit of no external tooling costs. While fiber laser cutting and powder coating was outsourced, bending, welding, woodworking, and assembly was done in-house.
The first piece resolved was a bent laser cut sheet metal chair with flexible cantilevered seat pan. The form language and assembly principles of this chair informed the subsequent collection. The tables were constructed out of sustainably harvested regional ash or maple and powder-coated laser cut steel. A standout piece of the collection was a community ping-pong table with take-away chopsticks forming the “net”. Stools from the Such + Such: Home collection were called upon to round out the furnishing.
